At turns funny and powerful, Mothers and Sons portrays a woman who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of her late son's partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son. Challenged to face how society has changed around her, generations collide as she revisits the past and begins to see the life her son might have led.

Character Descriptions

Cal: (50ish) – Eager to please, a peacemaker – adores Will and their son, Bud, but still has some bitterness to resolve around the senseless death of his partner, Andre, to AIDS nearly 20 years ago and for the woman who turned her back on them both because of her homophobia – Andre's mother.

Will: (35-ish) – Fifteen years younger than Cal, the doting house husband. Absolutely adores Cal and Bud, but worries that he will never measure up to the memory of Andre. Although he is the ideal husband and father, Will doesn’t take "stuff" from anyone and can have quite a caustic and biting sense of humor.

Katherine: (70-ish) – Andre's mother. Wears her fur coat like armor. Bitter and disappointed by life in general, she can be prickly, brittle, unbending and blind. Make no mistake, there is a lot of pain here. She is afraid and resentful that Cal has forgotten Andre and moved on with his new life when she can't. She does have a tiny soft spot for Bud.

Bud: (6-ish) – Precocious, smart with a huge heart. He doesn’t yet know that you are supposed filter what pops into your head before it pops out of your mouth. His world revolves around the great life that Pappy and Pop-Pop have provided him. Bud wants to adopt Katherine as his grandmother.

Auditions will consist of readings from the script. Sides are on the Village Theatre Guild website. These are general auditions and no appointment is necessary. Please note, VTG is a non-paying/non-equity theatre.

Please be prepared to wring out the humor (and there is a lot – it is Terrence McNally) in this piece during auditions. I will be specifically looking for people who can do that successfully.

Please contact Jackie Meara (director) with any questions at jackiem1600@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you there!
